In the early part of the 20th century, Britain produced more than 30 films depicting Mormons as evil, vampiric perverts. Shown primarily in burlesque houses, the films often portrayed a Mormon villain who used mesmerism to seduce young girls into becoming his polygamous wives. One very early such film, A Mormon Maid (1916), absurdly linked the Mormons and the Ku Klux Klan. Trapped by the Mormons (1922) is the Star Wars of the genre, and was so widely popular that a sequel, Married to a Mormon, was made later the same year.
Cherry Red Productions filmed Trapped by the Mormons in a Washington DC warehouse over the course of jsut four weekends in the fall of 2004. Following the shoot, the film was edited and digitally “aged” and, voila!, a silent film for the twenty-first century! The film premiered in 2005 at NYC’s legendary Pioneer Theater before screening in theaters across the U.S., and eventually settling into its current status as modern cult classic.
